Like General Alexander said in Cassino why the objective was taking so long to take and with huge allied casualties,he said " Simple, because we are fighting against the Best soldiers in the world" ( referring to the German Paratroopers, the Fallschirmjager). The Green Devils,as the Americans call them.

My grandfather was in an artillery company in Guinea, I think he was 16-18 when he joined the war. He has never talked openly about the war and my guess is that it still messes with him. I remember seeing his albums from the war and one of his company mates was holding decapitated heads and captured weapons in one of the photos. When I inquired about it to my parents, they said it was a guy that became crazy ever since the war. My other grandfather like many others walked all the way through Spain to northern France to avoid conscription with only 18 years of age. I never met him but my parents said to me that he never talked about his experiences of when he had to flee. The only time he talked about anything from that experience was that he had to sleep rough under a bridge. My guess is that the all experience traumatized him from dealing with homelessness for months, hunger, cold and dealing in a daily basis with other desperate people trying to survive. I also have an uncle that fought in the war but I don´t know exactly where. He has been very distressed lately with the current news which has been reminding too much of his younger years and the war period. A whole generation scarred for life and many buried in the jungle for some piece of land far away from home. Terrible. It annoys me a great deal when I see people online that have nostalgia for the Salazar regime even though they never lived it. A wish for the time when the country had "glory". What a charade. It´s like our grandparent´s agony during the war wasn´t loud enough to pass some of earth´s thickest skulls. It also annoys meeting people that lived those times and miss it! Calling the best days of their lives because their education in Portugal would get them an average unremarkable white collar job but during the war they could be officers working in office desks everyday and being "relevant" and having authority and go to parties during the night. Don´t mind the fact that the ignorant farmer had to mingle in the mud for 13 years.

de Havilland Mosquito was not mentioned, was this an oversight? A plane that was true multirole; fighter, bomber, night fighter, reconnaissance and pathfinder which was admired by Hermann Goering. P38 Lightnings were plagued with a high rate of engine failure. It got so bad that the commander of the 8th Air Force pulled it out of Europe. The same cannot be said about Mosquitos.

i feel like most people who fought in WW2 were simply pressured by their country's society to become a soldier, i think theres enough evidence throughout history showing that humans are basically the same no matter their nationality or race, and given the opportunity, will sue for peace. i think of that Christmas in WW1 where german and british soldiers met in no man's land to celebrate together, honestly one of my favorite moments of human history

My StepFather Ret. Major Robert Joseph Wells was in Vietnam in '63 as an advisor. He never spoke much about his two tours , but he did tell me about one incident where him and PFC Black were the only Americans in a camp near the dmz when it was overrun. They spent the nite back to back in complete darkness until the next day when US troops came in to retrieve them. I wish I knew more of his time there , but due to his passing away 2 years ago I cannot find more about his time there. He lived thru the conflict so it had to have been harrowing for him. I do know his funeral was very disappointing loss an I am disgusted with the lack of military honoring he received. He is laid to rest at the veterans cemetery in Jacksonville , Fl.

I have some personal issues with Japanese culture as ive encountered it. Especially in my older age cohort. Insular with struggles of trying not to project superiority. Xenophobic. Deeply sexist. And racist. Admittedly much of this stemmed from a fame-seeking md/phd who expected ppl to come in on weekends. He had not a single cell of empathy. I was suffering from tough depression. He came into.my office and blankly advised me to "just fix your depression." You dont forget advice like that. He yold me that my gf at the time was really stupid.

They were not smart,Japan had conquered the whole of Asia and Oceana, exhausted their personnels, ammunitions and unbearable death toll. If a country who had not taken part in these conquest and having everything at their disposal, even if framed you attacking them first, they should have swallowed the humble pie, than being arrogant for them to enter into a war where all participants are deadly weak and exhausted in 1942.

Britain survived the Blitz and the Battle of Britian because of Canada. Not just because of the role we played in supplying them through the German U-boat blockade, but because the pilot training program ensured that the RAF could continually field experienced and effective pilots to defend Britain, while the Luftwaffe could not continue to replace their experienced pilots. Add to that the industrial contribution, Juno Beach and Caen, the taking of the V2 rocket launch sites, the Scheldt, the liberation of the Netherlands, Sicily and Italy, and the ill-fated Dieppe Raid which laid the foundations of the success at D-Day, and its a no-brainer who Britain loved most.

I am Japanese, and I find it unfortunate that some of the photos in this video are used in a way that gives the impression that they were taken by the Japanese military. I also felt that the comparison of the total number of deaths, including civilians, in the Sino-Japanese War with the number of soldier deaths in battles in France and Germany was an attempt to manipulate public opinion. If this was done intentionally and not as a mistake of ignorance, then this is not a history lesson, but historical propaganda. Finally, it is also very malicious to use Hashimoto Toru's comments as if he approves of forced sexual slavery. He is saying that war and facilities that provide sexual services are inseparable, just as the US military also set up sex entertainment facilities during the Vietnam War.

What did you expect them to do? Why didn't the US soldiers act the same? It was a war, remember. English is not my language, be careful when you read.

Nice video but your statement that, India contibuted a lot of men but the Canadians provided men and supplies sounds extremely misleading considering India provided 196.7 million tonnes of coal, 6 million tonnes of iron ore and 1.12 million tonnes of steel. Along with that, 35 per cent of India’s annual cotton textile production, amounting to about 5,000,000,000 yards, went into creating war material. Infact, the (then) colony’s entire output of timber, woollen textiles and leather goods, as well as three quarters of its steel and cement, were diverted to the defence of the British Empire. The massive amount of timber extracted contributed to a large scale deforestation in many areas, effects of which are seen to this day. India was, next to Britain, the largest contributor to the Empire’s war. All the while famines were going in the country due to the agricultural practises and crops imposed onto us (cotton, indigo, and poppy) by the British. Edit: What do you think the war in North Africa was about? The Germans wanted to sieze the Suez Canal, thereby preventing Supplies from India going to Britain. Supplies without which the Brits would've lost.

It's all a case of the scum rising to the surface of a peacetime military pond. These morons planned strategies based on WW1 tactics - think of the Lions led by Donkeys in the First WW sending troops over the top as they were fighting the Crimea War. Percival really takes the cake. He opined that Japanese would invade Singapore in the north east because that's were the port was. That was where the strait was widest. They came across in the north west where it was narrowest. He even sent scouts in beforehand who reported the IJA marshaling their forces. "no, it's just a feint," he declared. When the Australians on the north west reported the invasion, he was unswayed.
